How to Research DePIN Projects Without Chasing Hype

A repeatable evaluation framework for DePIN projects: real infrastructure, operating costs, governance, security, and transparent incentives.

Infrastructure nodes linked across an abstract grid

There is no responsible universal list of “best” DePIN projects. A better approach is comparing projects with a consistent set of questions.

Check whether infrastructure is real

Look for independent evidence of deployed hardware, active customers, service availability, and operational documentation. Separate announced partnerships from working integrations.

Price the operator experience

Hardware, power, maintenance, taxes, internet, and downtime can exceed any expected reward. Ask how operators are selected, measured, paid, and supported when equipment fails.

Evaluate governance and security

Identify who can change emissions, access data, or pause services. Look for published audits, incident reports, and clear channels for vulnerability disclosure. These are stronger signals than marketing language.
